Instructions for Contributors

General Information

The journal publishes scholarly works (studies, materials, edited documents), book reviews, annotations, and informational reports. The length of scholarly works must be no less than 20 standard pages (1 standard page = 1,800 characters including spaces) and no more than 50 standard pages. Submissions should be sent to: editor@slovakstudies.sk.

Structure of a scholarly work: Author; title; text of the scholarly work; information about the author: full name with academic titles, name and address of the affiliation (institution), email address, ORCID; list of primary sources and literature used; abstract (approximately 1,500 characters); keywords.

Formatting Guidelines (depending on the language used)

Titles of publications and foreign expressions (i.e. different from the language of the main text) are rendered in italics in the text.

Quotations are rendered in italics only if their language differs from the main text.

Authorial insertions within quoted text are placed in square brackets: “Quote [authorial insertion] continuation of quote.” The same applies to ellipses: “Quote […] continuation of quote.”

Citation Style Guidelines

Examples of the application of these rules are provided below.

Persons with primary responsibility for the work, usually authors or, in the case of edited volumes, compilers, are listed in the form First Name Surname (in small caps) as the first element of the citation entry; multiple authors are separated by a comma and a space.
All authors/compilers should be listed; only in the case of collective monographs is it permissible to state the given name followed by the addition “et alii” in the citation entry; authors/compilers are omitted only in anonymous works or in works with a large number of contributors (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, etc.).
The author(s)/compiler(s) are followed by a colon, a space, and the title of the cited work; (sub)titles are separated by full stops and spaces.
The main title and all subtitles of the work appear in italics only if the cited work is not part of a larger publication (an edited volume, periodical, etc.) – in such cases, only the title of the larger publication is italicised.
The final (sub)title is likewise followed by a full stop and a space, after which the names of individuals with secondary responsibility for the work (translators, editors…) are listed, if any. Their names are recorded in the same manner as the authors’ names (in small caps), followed by the type of responsibility in parentheses: (trans.) for a translator, (ed.) for an editor. Subsequent details are separated by a full stop and a space.
Following the title, or the names of individuals with secondary responsibility, publication details are provided in the following format: place of publication, colon, space, publisher’s name, comma, space, and finally year of publication. Multiple publication details of the same type are separated by a space, an en dash, and a space.

When citing specific pages, this detail is appended after the year of publication, separated by a comma and a space. Numbers in page ranges are joined by an en dash without spaces.
In addition to page numbers, supplementary information further identifying the citation source may be included, such as document/appendix numbers, or a note indicating that the information is drawn from a footnote.
Volume and issue numbers of edited volumes/periodicals are given in Arabic numerals.
If the work forms part of a larger publication, a full stop, a space, and the word “In” followed by a colon and a space precede the citation entry of the overall work.
When citing periodical publications, including yearbooks, the compiler of the periodical is omitted; the citation entry begins directly with the title of the periodical in italics, followed by the year, volume, and finally issue and page numbers, with all elements separated from preceding details by a comma and a space.
For online sources, the URL address is enclosed within angle brackets “<>”.
When citing archival sources, the reference must be structured in a way that allows for the easiest possible retrieval.
Shortened citations may take several forms. The basic form consists of the authors’/compilers’ surnames (in small caps, separated from one another by a comma and a space, with a colon and a space following the final name), followed by the main title, a comma, a space, and the page range (if the work is part of a larger publication, the latter is no longer stated). A second option is to create a custom abbreviation for the work and state it in the first full citation entry after the title in the form “(short title)”; a third option is the use of idem and ibidem.
Abbreviations are to be used in the following forms: page/pages = p./pp., issue/issues {or number/numbers} = n./nn., volume/part = vol., compare = cfr., editor/editors = ed./eds., translator = trans., following pages = s (directly after the page number, i.e. without a space = p. 10s), place of publication unstated = s. l., publisher unstated = s. n., year of publication unstated = s. a., under the entry/word = s. v., document = doc.
