About the Journal

The journal Slovak Studies: Rivista dell’Istituto Storico Slovacco di Roma is a peer-reviewed academic journal of the Slovak Historical Institute in Rome, published by Rubbettino Editore. The journal focuses on Slovak history from the earliest times to the present. It pays particular attention to the historical relations between Slovakia and the Holy See, as well as between Slovakia and Italy.

Slovak Studies began publication in 1961 as a journal of the Slovak Institute in Rome, a scientific and cultural institution of Slovaks in the free world. Its aim was to provide Slovak scholars, who found themselves exiled abroad due to adverse conditions in their homeland, with a space to publish the results of Slovak-related research abroad and to create a platform for communication with the non-Slovak scholarly community. By 2003, thanks to the efforts of its founders and successors, thirty-four printed issues and one CD-ROM issue were published, after which a long hiatus ensued. Following a 2014 agreement between the Slovak Institute in Rome and the Slovak Historical Institute in Rome, the Slovak Historical Institute in Rome took over the publication of Slovak Studies. Since 2015, the journal Slovak Studies: Rivista dell’Istituto Storico Slovacco di Roma has continued the original idea of Slovak Studies – to present the research of Slovak scholars to the international academic community.

The journal publishes scholarly works (studies, source materials, edited documents), book reviews, annotations, and informational reports. Texts are generally published in English or Italian. The journal is issued in print and is also published electronically on a dedicated website. The publication frequency is annual.
